What is Bittorrent

Bittorrent is peer to peer filesharing. First, you need to install a torrent client (recommended clients), then download a torrent file and add it to the torrent client. Assuming you have ample disk space and don’t need to port-forward, you’re all set. Here’s the Wikipedia article.

Common Terms

Leech/Leeching is the downloading of a file via bittorrent.
Seed/Seeding is the uploading of a file via bittorrent.
The Swarm is the pool of “users” that are sharing the same file.
The Tracker manages active peers so your client knows who to connect to.
Announcing, is your torrent client telling the tracker that you're online and wanting to download/upload.
The Passkey is a string assigned to your torrent that identifies your client to the tracker.

Advantages of Bittorrent

Bittorrent removes the central point-of-failure that is the traditional filehost. Once a full copy of the file makes it into the swarm, it’s virtually impossible to take down without manually blacklisting the torrent infohash at the tracker level.

Be connectable

Torrent clients will usually have an indicator at the very bottom of the client indicating if you’re connectable. In short, this means if your port is open or not. Usually this won’t be a problem, you can use a tool such as Port Checker to test. Portforward.com has an exhaustive list of routers if you need additional help. If your ISP forces a NAT, or you’re behind a restrictive network such as a University or a workplace, your best bet is using a VPN to switch networks. We recommend Mullvad.

What is the passkey for?

The passkey ties a torrent file to an account. This is done to prevent third-party sites from passing our torrents as their own. It’s embedded in the announce URL of every .torrent, so anyone with your file can use your account.

They must be fully open source
They must be fully free - no paid versions

Your personal feed URL is on your profile. It carries the 100 most recent torrents and works in any RSS reader or torrent client. You can automate some neat things with it such as:

Filtering the feed

Add parameters to the end of the URL with &.

Every torrent is named the same way, so searching is predictable and versions sort properly.

Title with no spaces, capital letter on each word, then a hyphen and the version.

Reading a name

BeingADIK-CH4v0.3 is Being a DIK, chapter 4, version 0.3. If a download covers several chapters we name it after the last one, so CH4 may include chapters 1 to 4.
